Abstract:
In the summer of 1970, in collaboration with Mr. P. Throckmorton, as technical director, the Greek Archaeological Service began the exploration of a big byzantine shipwreck by the island of Pelagos near Alonnessos. The cargo included mainly ceramic material ( amphorae, plates, etc. over 1500 pieces ) as well as 6 big mill - stones. The finds were picked up after having been photographed and sketched in situ. The majority of the plates have a glazed surface with engraved decorations showing geometrical patterns, birds, animals, « cufic letters», interlace designs, floral patterns etc. (figs. 1-11).The decoration technique of the finds dates the shipwreck to the mid- 12th century.
