Abstract:
This work attempts to sketch the personality of Κέφαλος, general of theThessalian federal state during the imperial era. It re-examines the relative epigraphicalmaterial and edits an inscription from Larissa, which, despite thedramatically fragmentary state it is found in, proves to be extremely revealing. The study leads to the following conclusions:1. General Κέφαλος, dated to the Augustan period —with no other dues tohis identity up to now— is identified as his contemporary ΚέφαλοςΊππολόχου from Larissa, connected thus to the eminent family Ίππολόχων and Άλεξίππων being indisputably a distinguished member of it.2. The reformation of the Κλέαρχος family stem from Larissa is proved indispensableand leads to the omission of some intrusive members such asa) Ήγησάρετος. ταγός, coming from Krannon and dated to the second halfof the 2nd century B.C., due to the archaeological facts which unquestionablyprove the origin of the decree, in which he is mentioned, to beKrannon and not Larissab) General Κέφαλος himself andc) Ήγησάρετος. the general’s son, winner at the local games in Larissa.3. It throws light on scientific obscurities concerning prosopographical andchronological matters. It interprets correctly the meaning of the formulationτην πρώτην χώραν omitting the geographical feature attributed toit. The misinterpretation of this term has led research to pragmatologicaland historical inaccuracies. It brings forward and certifies the local andespecially that of Larissa’s character of the games which included προσ-δρομην Ιππέων την Ήγησαρέτω in which Ήγησάρετος Κεφάλου, thegeneral’s son was made known as winner.4. Finally, it reveals the natural and adopted children of general Κέφαλοςleading safely to the conclusion that they shared equivalent legal rights atleast within range of the institution of slave manumissions.
