Abstract:
An interesting cist tomb with painted decoration was discovered in 1965, together with other contemporary tombs during the construction of the School of Theology in the University Campus of Thessaloniki. The paintings were found in a poor state of preservation; since then they have been removed and are now preserved at the Byzantine archaeological Collection in the Rotunda of Thessaloniki. All four sides of the interior were painted with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Each long side contained two, and each narrow side one composition, set in border of red ribbon. On the east and west sides were depicted respectively Daniel in the Lion Den and Christ as a Good Shepherd. On the south side were represented the Miracle of Healing of the Paralytic and Noah with the Dove, while on the North side were the scenes of the Raising of Lazarus and the Sacrifice of Abraham. The dating of the paintings of tomb n° 18 can be based mainly on iconographie, stylistic and epigraphical grounds. According to this evidence we suggest a dating in the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th century, rather than a later dating after the middle of the 4th century, as it has been proposed elsewhere.
