Abstract:
The second word of the grave epigram from Pella Mr. E. Mastrokostas reads τηιδε instead of τεΐδε ( AAA XI, 1978, p. 195 - 197 ).The second letter of the word, however, is undoubtedly an E, because part of the cross - stroke and the lower horizontal stroke are well preserved1.In line 3 Mr. Mastrokostas transcribes Ένοδίας instead of εν9’ Αίας. He reads the third letter of the word as an O and the fourth one as a careless Δ.Our opinion is that the third letter has a point off center that makes it a Θ, and that the fourth letter is an A, because there is no difference in cutting from the other A of the epigram (fig. 1 )2.The first publication of the grave epigram BE 1977 / 1 as well as the grave stone BE 1977 / 2 makes no reference to the manner they were set by the grave.Recent excavations, however, of a cemetery of the late 5th and early 4th cent. B. C., between the Site and the village P. Pella, uncovered rectangular cuts either at the sides of the tombs or in the rock around the graves. Their dimensions in several cases are comparable to those of base BE 1977 / 1 and stone BE 1977 / 2 ( f i g. 2 )3.The grave epigram from Pella is an important historical and linguistic testimony of the Macedonian capital. Thus, every effort aiming to its correct reading and interpretation will considerably contribute to the history of the area.
