Abstract:
Rescue excavations in the west necropolis of Rhodes have brought to light important funerary monuments, like the funerary complex of “Aspis”, and have uncovered some notable cemeteries, amongst which stands the so-called “Anoikodomisis” cemetery. As a result of its excavation, 72 tombs and three thekai (burial cists) were discovered. They all date from the 4th to the 2nd c. BC, providing valuable information on the burial customs practiced in Rhodes during the period mentioned above.Although inhumation was the prevailing burial practice in “Anoikodomisis” cemetery, cremation burials were also found, inside either Hadra-type hydriai or cinerary caskets of Lardos stone. It is important to notice that only 25 of the tombs contained a great number of burial offerings, such as clay vessels, metal items (strigils, mirrors, pins), small bone objects, glass vases, gold-plated clay buttons, coins, etc. Among these, the numerous clay vessels provide important information on the imported Attic vases as well as on the local pottery. The group of Attic vases includes fish-plates, kan- tharoi, salt-cellars, small lekythoi, feeding bottles, small bowls, boisai kylikes, etc., while piriform amphoras, unguentaria and vases with painted decoration, such as stamnoid pyxides and Rhodian amphoras, belong to the local production.
