Abstract:
The head is a chance find from the village of Dendra, and is important on account of its dimensions (height 0.387, width 0.25 m.) and the scarcity of original sculptures from the Argolid. Although it is in a very poor state of preservation, due to chipping and wear, a female face can be made out with a reflective expression, oval outline, strong chin, almond-shaped eyes, and a narrow forehead. The arrangement of the hair is not clear. If its identification with a female deity is precluded, it seems that it was more probably a funerary statue than a figure from a large naiskos. Parallels with the unique female head of a sculpture from Lema that has been dated to the middle of the 4th c. BC, suggests a later date for the Dendra sculpture, in the late 4th-early 3rd c. BC, based on a number of technical features (attaching of an additional piece of the coiffure, in marble or stucco, at the back of the head) and the great difference in quality between the style of the two pieces.
