Abstract:
Fragments of a bronze helmet were found in the earthfill covering the enclosure of a looted chamber tomb that formed part of the cemetery of the ancient Aetolian town Potidania, located near the village Kambos Doridas. The fragments were mended and restored to a helmet of the Attic or pseudo-Attic type with protruding forehead (resembling an eye-shade), which dates in the Hellenistic period. Based on the few finds collected from other, also looted, tombs of this cemetery and by comparison with original helmets falling into the same category, we suggest that the helmet from Potidania may be dated to the late 4th- early 3rd c. BC.Particularly interesting is the decoration of each cheek-piece with the relief representation of a Macedonian shield featuring a twelve- ray star as its central badge. We are possibly dealing with a war-trophy from an Aetolian soldier’s grave.
