Abstract:
In the katholikon of the monastery of the Archangel Michael Roukouniotis on the island of Symi is a badly damaged painted panel. All that survives of the painted surface is part of a fortified city, which is not enough to enable the subject to be identified. The most important feature of the work, which dates, broadly speaking, from the advanced 15th century, is its trapezoidal shape and pointed top - a feature characteristic mainlyof Italian altar Dossale. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that no other panels like it have been preserved in the areas of Greece that came under Frankish rule. Reference is made to monumental painting, and mainly to portable panels, executed during the Hospitaller period on Rhodes, the capital of the Knights’ state, to indicate the cultural environment from which the Dossale came.
