This paper brings forward new information on Georgios Mormoris’ life and activities based on recent research in the Venetian archives about the island of Cythera. Mormoris, a doctor and philosopher from Cythera, has been identified as the author of the only, even today, translation into Greek of Torquato Tasso’s pastoral comedy Aminta. Mormoris came from a noble family known since the 16th century in Nafplion, on Crete and on the Ionian Islands. He was born in 1720 on Cythera, in 1762 he got married to Eleni Kaloutsi and they had 10 children together. Mormoris studied at the University of Padua from 1743 to 1745 thanks to the financial aid of a wealthy merchant from Epirus, Simos Maroutzis. The Venetian authorities officially appointed him state doctor of the island of Cythera in 1749 and Mormoris stayed on the island till his death in 1790. This article makes use of more than 200 documents to trace his multifold activity there as a doctor, a money-lender and an appreciated scholar.
