Abstract:
During recent excavations on Mt. Papikion in Thrace a curious vessel was found in the ruins of a monastery that was destroyed in the 13th c., and it remained unidentified in the publication where it appeared. The present article clarifies its function and name. It is a siphon (σιφώνι>σιφούνι>σφούνι>σφουνάκι) used to draw off wine by sucking througha tube and feeding-bottle made in one piece. A σφούνι having the same shape, function and name is still widely found in our time on Dionysus’ wine-growing island of Naxos. Its origin must be very old, for the siphon is mentioned in ancient texts, in which it has the same function, name and the same or a similar shape as today.
