Abstract:
Old friends and fellow-students at the Polytechnic School in Athens, G. de Chirico and D. Pikionis meet by chance in Paris at the beginning of 1912. Through the writings of the two men, their common cosmic theory is pointed out and a hypothesis is put forward that this meeting was the cause of de Chirico’s painting The departure of a friend. If the assumption is right, then the painting should be dated from 1912 instead of 1913 and be considered as the starting-point in a series of paintings in which the motif of either the meeting or the parting is embodied. Furthermore, an attempt is made to search a possible pattern for the painting The clarity of a dream and as such is suggested Oskar Kokoschka’s illustrated lyrical prose poem “The Dreaming Youths” (1908).
