Abstract:
I. Ancient cemetery at Ayios Stefanos, in ChalkisAn ancient cemetery was uncovered in the Gerontitis property near the bay of Ayios Stephanos, the ancient harbour of Chalkis, and at the S.W. slope of the Vathrovouni hill, which was lately proved to have been one of the ancient acropoleis of Chalkis (see S.C. Bakhuisen, The two Citadels of Chalkis in Euboea, AAA V ( 1972 ), 134 - 146 ).Forty three tombs, dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 4th centuryA.D., were excavated, including a thalamos, which imitates rather poorly the Macedonian tombs.A rectangular base, possibly of an altar, was found in front of a curved rock, which might have been used as a ‘table of offerings’. A sacrificial knife and a fragmentary inscription were found near the base.Other finds include : two Hellenistic and one Roman gravestone, eighty two gold olive leaves from an athlete’s wreath (fig. 1 ), many vases and terracottas (figs. 2 - 8 ), dating from the Hellenistic to the Roman period.II. GeraistosAt Kastri, on the southeastern coast of Euboea, in the site of ancient Geraistos, a trial excavation was undertaken in order to locate the sanctuary of Poseidon mentioned by Homer, Xenophon, Arrian, Strabo and other ancient authors.A large late Roman building was discovered and partly excavated. Architectural parts of a 4th century B.C. building, including triglyphs and an inscribed stone with the word ΠΟΣΕ[Ι- ΔΩΝΟΣ], had been used in the construction of its walls. These discoveries, together with the Kimolian decree ( published in Hesperia 1968, p. 184 ) found in the same site, prove that the sanctuary was situated nearby.
