Abstract:
A small part of the Medieval wall of the town, situated between two other sections uncovered and excavated in the past in neighbouring properties, came to light during the demolition of an old house in Ghalkis ( E. Veni- zelou Av., in the I. Zarganis property ). Thus the course followed by the North side of the Medieval ‘Kastro’ of Chalkis has been completely traced. The wall showed an incorporated Doric capital made of poros (fig. 1 ). According to the stylistic features, and particularly the curve of the echinus, we may date the capital between those of the temples of Aphaia on Aigina( 500 B.C. ) and of Zeus Olympios at Olympia ( 470 B.C. ).The capital is similar to four other specimens exhibited in the Museum of Chalkis. Three of these have come from the same building plot and were found during the construction of the house in the beginning of the century; the fourth has been recovered from a place nearby. All five capitals must have initially belonged to a temple of ancient Chalkis.Unfortunately, the literary sources and available data related to the topography of ancient Chalkis are not clear.Based on the evidence of an inscription of 446 B.C. {IG 12 39referring to a temple of Zeus Olympios in Chalkis, we may establish a chronological connection between the cepitals and the temple of ancient Chalkis. The excavation also yielded a comb made of bone with a relief decoration of two confronted lions (fig. 4 ) on the one side, and two peacocks in front of a fountain on the other (fig. 5).A comparison of these representations with similar ones decorating threeivory combs found in Corinth, a comb now in the British Museum, another in Erlbach Nürnberg, and the finds of an excavation at Belaya Vezna - all of which are assigned to the end of the 10th or the 11th century A. D. - leads to the dating of this comb from Chalkis to the same period. The quality of the relief suggests that the comb was intended for ceremonial purposes rather than common use.
