Abstract:
In Hesperia III ( 1934 ), pp. 58 - 59, No. 46, a fragmentary ephebic text was published and its date was given as about A.D. 100. Prosopography, however, places this catalogue at a later period. The ephebe Sostratos Mou ( sikou ) Eu ( p ) ( yrides ) of A.D. 155/6 ( IG., II 2, 2068, line 91 ) could be identical with the Sostratos Mousi- kou ( Eupy ( rides ) ) of Hesperia ( line 9 ), or he could be the grandfather of the latter, in which case the fragmentary ephebic text may date from the beginning of the third century after Christ, and perhaps from about A.D. 215/6. A date in this period seems to be supported also by P. Aelius Kepheiso- doros Anakaeus, who is known from Hesperia X ( 1941 ), p. 251, No. 53 = TAPhS LVIII ( 1 ), 1968, p. 17, note 15(c) ( from A.D. 202/3 or 206/7 ). P. Aelius Kepheisodoros Anakaeus is mentioned in the Hesperia fragmentary ephebic catalogue ( lines 11-12 ad. fin.), but his capacity is not clear, that is, whether he should be recognized as an ephebe or as an ephebic official. However, the position and manner of inscribing his name may favor the latter interpretation.
