Abstract:
Recent work at Orchomenos has permitted me to join together two already known inscribed blocks of stone ( the right hand block has itself recently been broken in two ). The inscriptions involved — military lists — are now reexamined.No. I results from the combination of IG VII 3185 and SEG III 371. This list dates to the middle of the second half of the 3rd century B.C. After its original carving a line (5a) was inserted, adding another name to the list. The federal archon’s name is missing, but could be restored as either Hippias or Nikias. Some of the local Orchomenian officials named may be tentatively connected with persons known from other inscriptions. The distribution in Boiotia and environs of the various names in the list is examined.No. Ila is one name inscribed between IG VII 3184 and 3185.No. lib is a reexamination of IG VII 3184 of which the text is rendered more comprehensible by the removal of Ila. This list dates well into the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. The federal archon cannot be restored, but the local archon is known to have served previously as polemarchs’ secretary c. 220 B.C. ( IG VII 3174). Again the distribution of the names in the list is examined with regard to Boiotia and surrounding areas.
