Abstract:
Kouveleiki cave B lies at the western edge of the Mariorema basin in Lakonia, at an altitude of 350 m. and 50 m. away from Kouveleiki cave A. The form of the cave, that of a single chamber measuring 25 x 12 m„ probably identifies it as a large rock- shelter. The investigation of the cave revealed that it was in continuous use from the Late to the Final Neolithic. With regard to the material culture, coarse ware domestic pottery was found, typical of the wares of the Late and Final Neolithic. As to the lithic technology, a rich assemblage of lithic toolswas found, mostly of obsidian but also of flint and serpentine, and there was evidence for the manufacture of tools ‘on the spot’.The cave was also used for burials, with primary interments, and there is solid evidence that economic activities also took place within it. The pottery and lithic technology are strikingly different from those in Kouveleiki cave A. The evidence points to the cave being occupied by groups of peoples adopting a strategy of exploiting the sites in the surrounding area.26
