Abstract:
Euboea has produced a limited number of sarcophagi of Roman date. They consist of five fragments of Attic sarcophagi (A1-A5) and one from Asia Minor (Bl). The Attic sarcophagi include fragment Af, of a Diony- siac sarcophagus dating from about the middle of the 3rd c. AD (fig. 1); fragments A2 and A3, of two Klinen-Riefel-Sarkophage dating from the late 2nd c. AD (fig. 2-3); fragment A4 of a pedimental lid of a sarcophagus with relief decoration on the pediment, dating from the second half of the 2nd c. AD (fig. 4- 5); and the two joining fragments A5, of thepedimental lid of a small sarcophagus dating from the middle of the 2nd c. AD (f i g. 6). The only intact sarcophagus of this type at Oreoi, dating from AD 180-250, comes from Asia Minor, more specifically from Assos in the Troad (fig. 7-8). The small number of surviving sarcophagi attests to the economic difficulties of Euboea at this period. In an epimetron, reference is made to a now lost Girlanden-Sarkophag found in the 19th century at Chalkis and two reliefs erroneously assigned to sarcophagi (fig. 9).
