The article presents theatre activity in Athens during the Othonian reign in Greece focusing on the activity of the «Theatre of Athens» (Θέατρο Αθηνών) for a period starting from its opening in January 1840 until 1863. The author offers a general view of the theatrical life during the first decades on the new Greek state, the reactions of the authorities and the views exposed in newspapers for the performances of Italian melodrama and Greek plays. An almost exhaustive catalogue of the performances presented in this theatre for every season of its functioning is presented in an appendix added to the article.
