In South Thasos two prehistoric settlements have been discovered in the summer of 1969:I. MariesPrehistoric settlement in a cave near the village Maries. Sherds of the end of Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age have been collected ( fi g s. 1 -7 ).Π. TheologosPrehistoric settlement on the top of a rocky hill named « Kastri ».A. The settlementAt the top there are some ruined walls of uncertain date ( Prehistoric citadel ? ).The surface finds from the settlement are:1. Late Neolithic sherds (fig. 8)( black on red, graphite painted). A very few stone axes and blades ( f i g. 9 ).A very interesting head of a clay figurine (fig. 10 ). of the neighbouring rocky hills, an extensive cemetery, with built Cist-tombs, has been discovered (fig. 11). A small excavation took place in the South cemetery ( September 1969 ). According to the finds, this part ofthe cemetery is to be dated to the end of the Late Bronze Age and to the Early Iron Age. This cemetery is the first cemetery of this period to have been discovered in East Macedonia.
