Abstract:
Various works of restoration in wall-painted churches of the Cyclades took place during the last months of 1969. Of these the discoveries in the church of Drossiani on the island of Naxos were, certainly, the most important, where frescoes of the 6th - 7th (?) century have appeared under later plaster ( the work is under the supervision of Prof. N. Drandakis ). In the island of Paros there are the ruins of the little Byzantine church of Theoskepastos, with remains of 12th- 13th century fresco decoration. The work was intended to protect the frescoes awaiting further restoration which will take place this year ( fi g s. 1 - 4 ).In the island of Mykonos, on the road from the town to Piati Yalos, there is a little barrel - vaulted church, called Panaghia tou Cousi. Three periods of decoration are preserved in the bema of the church, two of them from the Byzantine era. As far as I know these are the oldest wall-paintings in Mykonos. The work of cleaning and conservation will be continued this year (figs. 5 - 7 ).In the laboratories, finally, of the Athens Byzantine Museum, work of cleaning and conservation on frescoes from churches of Naxos ( Lathrino, 13th cent. ) was continued and finished (figs. 8 - 10 ).
