Abstract:
The subject of this paper is the identification of the poet Georgios Chortatsis with the townsman (cittadino) of Rethymno Georgios Chortatsis, son of loannis, based on unpublished documents. The information of the archive sources, which can be considered safe, confirm that: 1) The aforementioned Georgios Chortatsis, son of loannis, is the only Georgios Chortatsis of Rethymno contemporary of the poet, 2) His social status is the same of the poet’s: he was a cittadino, in a period of intense progress of the «bourgeoisie» in Kreta, 3) He was an educated man. He could write both in Greek and in excellent Italian, 4) The Chortatsis family was related to a remarkable Venetian (not Venetian- Cretan) noble family, 5) He had friends, acquaintance or economical and business transactions with people belonging to upper social and educational classes, while he was also close with city craftsmen and peasants, 6) He knew Chandakas the way the poet knew it. In the paper, 23 documents are being published for the first time. They contain information about a lawsuit very important for Georgios Chortatsis, son of loannis and about its background. They also offer precious evidence about everyday life in the time of «Erofili’s» poet.
