Abstract:
Unpublished documents and reports for Propaganda Fide substantiate a clearer portrait of the priest Michail Vestarchis from Chios, one of the most prolific Greek playwrights of 17th century, almost contemporary of loannis Andreas Troilos. His biografy itself is of great interest, but also for another reason: because it reflexes the relationships between the Orthodox and the Catholic church in Chios, during the 17th century. It is the only instance that the Orthodox church relented its negative attitude towards the theatre, an attitude dating from the first centuries of its existence (of the church), which, recorded in the prohibitions of the first Synods, was repeated in the rules and comments of the Synodic decisions during the whole Byzantine period. This exception must have been related to the theatrical activities of the Catholic Orders in Aegean Sea.
