Abstract:
The theatre play «The Tragedia of Saint Demetrios», by an unknown poet, which was staged on 29 December in Naxos was found on a manuscript of Naxos Jesuit cloister. All the names of the amateur actors are recorded on the manuscript. This rare coincidence enables us to identify all the factors of the production, a unique instance in the history of modern Greek theatre before 1821. The conclusions of the research were extremely enlightening about the nature and function of religious performances in Aegean Sea in the era of Counter-Reformation, connected mainly with the Jesuit Orders and their educational system. The production participants were offsprings of powerful West European families, residents of Naxos, and in some cases of Catholic Greek families. Most of them were related either by blood or by marriage ties; at the time of the production their ages ranged from 10 to 55 years; the older ones piayed the leading parts; some of the amateur actors were priests; all of them were on excellent terms with the Naxos cloister and the Jesuit fathers.
