Abstract:
«Evanthia from Andros» (1799-1866) was a remarkable woman of her time «one of the most significant Greek women», «one of the most distinguished feminine figures of regenerated Greece», a woman of excellent education and spiritual courage. Her work, as well as her life, was not independent: it was closely connected with her brother’s, Theofilos Kairis’. The drama «Nikiratos» was printed in Nafplion, in 1826. According to its prologue, the whole or part of it was written in Andros in 1826 and it is the only drama in her work. She was inspired by the shattering event of Missolunghi exit. She was extremely sensitive about her «great duty», her patrioticism that made her choose this subject. She was absolutely conscious of the historical meaning of the event, so she started composing her play immediately after it happened and completed it within three months. She created an interesting historical drama, containing reality and hot impressions of the heroic exit.
