Abstract:
In October of 1971 an unknown greek town has been discovered at the district of the village Pontolibadon 18 kil. east of Kavala. The town is small covering an extense of about 1,5 kil 2, and it is surrounded by walls. In the walls two different periods of construction have been discerned.According to the first results of the excavation inside the walls the most ancient hnds - for the present time - are dated to the last quarter of the 6th century. Very probably this time is also the date of the foundation of the town. This greek settlement must be a thasian colony, an έμπόριον in the thracian Peraia founded especially for exploitation of the silver and gold mines of the district. The existence of the lake Vasova in the neighbourhood gives an evidence for the identification of the new discovered greek settlement with ancient Pistyros, a greek town near a great lake according to the narration of Hero- dotos. His identification, however, is still doubtful, because there is another ancient site, a roman fortress unexplored yet, in the district of the lake Vasova.Being Pistyros or not, the new discovered ancient town at Pontolibadon must be certainly one of the ήπειρώ- τιδας πόλις which, according to Hero- dotos (VII, 109) passed Xerxes, when marched through Thrace against Athens at 480 B.C.
