Abstract:
Paul Claudel was not a familiar figure either for Greek artists or for the theatre-going public. The complexity of his symbols and his leaps of association, together with the absence of external action - the chief characteristics of his dramaturgy - did not form a challenge for the repertoire of a theatre company. The Athenian stage discovered Claudel in the shadow of the Civil War. La jeune fille Violaine was the first work of the author to be performed in Athens, in 1944. This was followed by a series of texts, of a theocentric character, which often annoyed the critics because of the projection through them of the spirit of Catholicism. In the last 15 years of the twentieth century, although a change of direction in the options of people of the theatre was observable and the works which were put on (L’Echange, Le partage de midi) responded more to human measures through the conflict of human passions with the restrictions of religion, the picture of Claudel’s creations for the theatre did not change radically. Their messages continued to fail to satisfy the ideological dictates of the modern age, while their poetic style does not seem to have answered to its aesthetic demands.
