Abstract:
Sentzas of Pantelis Horn is a play which was performed firstly in 1925 and reperformed by “Nea Skini” of National Theatre during the theatrical period 2002-2003. This is a play in three or four acts, while in the third act there are two different ends. In 1925 the subject of this comedy was considered particularly daring, causing an artistic scandal. The comedy consists of a fertile combination of elements of the theatrical tradition. The personality of Sentzas, the sexually insufficient man, who spread for himself, with persistence till the end of the play, the myth of irresistible lover throughout a Greek Aegean island, is one of the most interesting and original of the Hellenic play-writing of the 20th century. This personality can be analyzed on the basis of sociological and psychological facts and terms, as well as in relation to the theatrical tradition. The evolution of the plot is connected with the myth of Don Juan. Sentzas is an imaginary Don Juan. His relation to the street hawker, the responsible of several women’s seduction, has common characteristics with the relation of master and servant at Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. Sentzas has two doubles: one is the street hawker and the other one is his non-existing brother. At the play it is emphasized the split of the community’s moral through money and indirectly the corruption of the provincial morals. Sentzas is the intruder, who activates a pre-existing situation of social decay and sexual mood of the women, which was waiting for someone to break out. Finally, he doesn’t become the scape-goat of the society, but he is made to get married to Maritsa, the sister of Mathios, who is the president of the village, where Sentzas stays. Their emotional relationship during their marriage without sex shows the drama of the heroes and his mentality beyond the limits of the traditional ideology and practice. It is expressed the chimerical nature of happiness and the romantic mood of the playwright. Sentzas makes efforts after all to reveal his real person, so as to be redeemed, condition that occurs only in an allusive way. This redemption keeps up with his psychic death, a result of his weakness to hold with his own terms Maritsa.
