Abstract:
Intention of this article is to illuminate the relation of the Greek theatrical Revue to Politics, which is mostly taken for self-evident because of the fact that the satire of Politics is one of its subjects. After a distinction of the decisive factors, which gave the Greek Revue its specific character, is indicated that the political satire of the Greek genre is plainly a satire of the political actuality concerning events and phenomena which have aroused lively public interest, without having serious implications or consequences, while serious events are touched on only in their superficial dimension. In contrast to the rules of the political theatre the satire has no specific ideological focus or the intention to reveal the truth hidden underneath the surface, and its only concern is to keep in with the public mood, according to the elementary principle of every commercial theatrical genre. In the final analysis it is a conscious choice of the Greek theatrical Revue, dictated by its ideological orientation, to have an essentially apolitical stance with a political veneer.
