Abstract:
Found at the site «Paliopyrgos» near Vra- sta in the Chalcidice (C. Macedonia ). The lot, which is now in the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, Polygyros, consists of 21 issues of Isaakius II Angelos, 18 of Alexius III Angelos, 88 Direct copies ( =«Bulgarian» imitatives ), 177 Latin imitatives and one coin of the emperor Theodore I Lascaris. The hoard was probably hidden between 1214 (?) and before or immediately after 1219; it presents the same picture as the early dated Macedonian hoards previously published in BSt 14 ( 1973 ) pp. 131 ff. A further argument in support of the attributionof the Direct copies and the Latin imitatives to the same issuing authority ( cf. ADelt 28 ( 1973 ) Meletai, pp. 67 - 69), may be saught in the observation that in both groups there are cases where the unstruck obverse side bears in intaglio the device of the reverse side. The existence of specimens whose obverse side was not struck, may be accounted by a sudden extending of the production of the mint; by careless workmanship; or most probably by the fact that the issuing authority was more interested in the device on the reverse which reflected its political identity.
