Abstract:
Τhe excavations undertaken last year in Acronauplia by the 1st Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. The most important of these is a very rare «billon» coin issued by the Frankish prince of Achaia Guillaume de Villehardouin ( 1246 - 1278 ), when he was a member of a triumvirate in Euboea (fig. 1 a-b).The obverse has an anchor - shaped cross with the initials G.P.A C — Guliel- mus Princeps Achaie. The reverse carries the Latin number III with asign above, emblem of his authority over one third of the island. The issue is dated between A.D. 1255 - 1259, when Villehardouin challenged the other leaders for sovereignty over the island. He had gained his own position in the triumvirate through the hereditary rights of his wife Carintana. This coin is believed to be the fifth of its kind found so far. The first was found by a peasant in Euboea and delivered to P. Lambros, who published it in Pandora, in 1860 ( Vol. I, p. 481 ).
