Abstract:
A small fragment EM 9983 inscribed with the beginning of two of the lines, published erroneously as an epitaph : ΜνημΙόρων] j Πτολε[μαίον] is identified at the Epigraphical Museum as part of the epigram IG II2, 3734, concerning the ephebes in the archonship of Herodes (126/7 A. D. ).This provides an opportunity to present the restoration of the stele EM 8432 together with the fragment EM 9983 ( i. e. lines 6 - 7 of IG II2, 3734 ) and to give the dimensions of the small monument. Some observations are appropriateespecially on its meaning: namely that it commemorates the achievements of the ephebes or their participation at the festivals and that the objects depicted in the relief ( crown, amphora and a palm branch ) could be άθλα of the ephebes. According to the restoration αυτός ό’ ( 7th line, see supra n. 10), Diogenes of the tribe Antiochis paid for the erection of the stele when his friend Markianos ( of the tribe Ptolémaïs ) had to undertake these expenses. Despite this, it would be hazardous to restore Markianos as the friend of a certain Diogenes mentioned in another epigram from Megara ( IG VII, 118. G. Kaibel, Epigr. Graec. 958 ).Trying to explain the epigram, which is surely not written in honour of the cosmete, it was necessary to study the vase in the shape of Panathenaic amphora ( fi g. 2 ). As it is not possible to know if the vase was inscribed and the dimensions of its pattern amphora to compare it with the standard of the Panathenaic amphorae, the research was first done on the ephebic life at the Gymnasion, considering the possibility that it could be an oil amphora i.e., an award for the gymnic games ( given, perhaps, by the gymnasiarch, who was in relation with the distribution of the oil, see supra nn. 16 - 18 ).Although the representation on the relief EM 8432 of the amphora with the traces of red colour, together with a crown and a palm branch, is surelythat of a Panathenaic - prize amphora, the form is a derivation from the helleni- stic ones going down to the Roman times ( conical lid, handle - root from the lip, ovoid body with a big base, see supra nn. 20 - 23 ). Thus we have the official Panathenaic amphora of the year 126/7 A. D., when Herodes Atticus was archon, and the meaning of the epigram clarified : it commemorates one victory — or even more — of the ephebe Markianos at 126/7 A. D. (see supra n. 11).The fact that these symbols ( crown, Panathenaic amphora and palm branch) appear on the surely dated relief EM 8432, as also on several issues of the Athenian Imperial coinage, could offer an indication for a more precise date of the coins attributed yet to the Panathenaic festivals under Hadrian and perhaps also for the beginning of the new Panathenaic era.
