Georgios Mormoris’ Aminta and its model

Georgios Mormoris (1720-1790) from the island of Cythera composed and printed in Venice in 1745 a translation of the famous pastoral drama Aminta by Torquato Tasso. The comparison of the greek translation with the Italian original indicates that Mormoris followed his model faithfully, with some exceptions: without changing the structure of the play he almost doubled the length of the text creating new scenes; he also altered some others; adhering to the spirit of his model he often developed some passages to a much greater length; he greatly reduced the frequency of mythological allusion. Summarizing, it can be said that the Greek poet, well aware of the demands and techniques of classicising drama, showed signs of creative originality.
