Tracing back to the sources : towards a new reading of the notarial archives of the Cycladic islands

The article proposes a new approach to the notarial archives that is salvaged from the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean Sea, and dating back to the period of the Ottoman occupation. Taking into consideration that no official ratification of documents was obligatory by law during that time, the following hypothesis is explored: that under those specific historical conditions the notarial system as a whole can be viewed as a mechanism structuring some categories of social relations. This hypothesis is examined in relation to the main strategies that can be detected in the notarial material originating from Naxos and referring to the 17th century.
