Female entrepreneurs : anthropological approach to their occupational strategies
Author:
Abstract:
The study focuses on the ways in which female entrepreneurs achieve occupational ascent; an issue which acquires special significance in contemporary Greek society where petite bourgeois ideologies stress self-reliance, while the family plays a major role as a social unit. The emphasis attached to entrepreneurs’ perceptions and experiences highlights the ingenious means with which they negotiate their identity, the formation process of ideas and practices related to work and the family, the strategies with which they take advantage of the opportunities they encounter. The ideological framework of their behaviour is linked to the asymmetry of gender relations which affects both the symbolic meaning and the actual trajectory of their work activities. In this sense, their adoption of practices usually accorded to subordinate women does not prove their social subjugation. Rather, it derives from personal choices intended to preserve their freedom of decision-making. By disguising their behaviour in socially approved ways they attain goals within the realm of work, keep the balance of family relationships intact and overcome conflicts between their occupational autonomy and social definitions of female behaviour.
