Abstract:
This paper examines the situation in the field of folklore studies and ethnology and, more specifically, of research into material culture, with particular emphasis on the last forty years and form the academic, technical, legal, economic and political points of view. In the academic context, the paper refers in brief to the emergence of material culture as a field of study in Europe, to the history of the study of «material life» by folklorists in Greece, and to the Quebec Museum of Civilization as a model project. This is followed by a review of the background to industrial archaeology in Europe, a brief account of its early steps in Greece and a survey of the situation in industrial archaeological research in Greece today. The paper then moves on to emphasize the importance for graduates who wish to conduct further studies in ethnology of a knowledge of field research techniques, of the legal relationships by which their work is governed, of the financial planning and management which their work involves, of the - usually adverse - political conditions in which it is conducted, and of the need for vision, planning and the faith that difficulties can be overcome and the optimal result produced.
