The aim of this paper is to address the issue of the production and circulation of post- byzantine icons among the Adriatic coastal regions, through the example of Ioannes Permeniates, a prominent icon-painter who kept a workshop in Venice during the first half of the sixteenth century.Until recently the artistic production of Permeniates was considered to be primarily focused on the creation of icons in the Venetian style, while only two signed icons at the Kas- toria Museum supplied proof of his familiarity and involvement with the orthodox tradition.This study attempts the identification of three possible works of Permeniates, painted according to the Cretan manner and hitherto attributed to unknown masters. The first one is an icon of the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne from the group of paintings, destroyed in the Second World War, that formed the iconostasis of the Greek-orthodox church of Saint Anne in Ancona, Italy. The second group, originating from the Monastery of Lomnica in Bosnia and Hercegovina, consists of the icons of the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist, fragments of a larger composition depicting the Deisis. Finally, the last work is exhibited in the Serbian-orthodox church of the Annunciation in Dubrovnik and portrays the Virgin and Christ with the apostles Peter and Paul.The attribution of these icons to Ioannes Permeniates and their addition to the body of his work helps reevaluate his artistic production within the scope of the new findings, indicating that the painter was capable of mastering both the Cretan and Western modes of painting. Moreover, the discovery of his works throughout the Adriatic is associated with the growth of the newly established orthodox communities and is indicative of the cultural interchange between Italian and Dalmatian port-cities, as well as the dissemination of taste from the Venetian mainland to its provinces.
