Space as an expressive factor in music
Author:
Abstract:
Music, as an Art, expressively develops itself in Time. Space, up to now, is used either as a balance factor of sonorous volume, or in order to reinforce factors, whose immediate connection with musical functions is quite controversial In both cases the resoundiug media move and exist in space indipendently of Music itself. Modern Music, on the contrary, seeks to enlarge the listener’s emotional receptivity, in relation to the musical work, leading the resounding impressions up to their primary essence. The listener is called to enjoy Sound as a composition in itself, while the factor Space, whenever it is used as an expressive medium, co-exists with the other musical functions as a totally equivalent element. The study of specific cases has proved that Space becomes an expressive medium in Music :1. Whenever the Composer, with «dynamisms» (i.e. forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo ), sound - colour and successive addition and substraction of resounding volume, tries to subject a factitious impression of space. ( Ex. « Fêtes » from the « Nocturnes » for women Chorus and Orchestra by Claude Debussy; bars 124- 174),2. Whenever the Composer intends to create real resounding impressions through effective usage of acoustic conditions of such specially built Concert Halls. (Ex. the relative experiments tried recently in Germany ), and 3. Whenever art used Mechanic media, such as stereophonic recordings, mechanic elaboration of sound or both of them (Ex the «Carré» by K. H. Stockhausen, written specially for Radio broadcasting). The effective use of the open - air Space, as an expressive medium in Music, has not yet been studied satisfactorily. This neglect is partly justified abroad, because of the climatic conditions as well as the lack of suitable Concert Halls in the open air. However in Greece, the temperate climate and, above all, the excellent acoustic conditions of some ancient open - air theatres, offer many possibilities for a fruitful and interesting research study.
