Abstract:
There exist some moments in everyone’s life, which seem to determine one’s way thereafter. Identified in the lives of personalities of the Sciences, the Arts or Politics, such instances acquire particular importance inasmutch as the person’s course of development affects the development of his social environment. The present project refers to one such moment:Early in the year 1860, Nikiforos Lytras, to be later recognised as a remarkable Greek painter, founder of the "Munich group", had just graduated from the Royal School of the Arts. In order to continue in Rome his studies in Painting, he applied to the Government for financial support. His application was accepted and the Royal Decree issued on 21/4/1860 specified Munich as the place where Lytras was to pursue advanced studies as a holder of a State scholarship. In the draft, however, of this decree Paris or Rome were suggested as suitable places for the painter’s graduate studies. This small detail seems to acquire particular importance in the history of the development of Modern Greek Painting. It would be unwisely risky to try to imagine what the development of Lytras would be like had he continued his studies in Rome or Paris instead. It could be claimed beyond any doubt, however, that his own artistic output as well as that of the entire "Munich group” which he greatly influenced, would have been considerably different.Who and what intervened between the draft of the decree and its final form? Probably King Otto himself. His father’s, Ludwig of Bavaria, interest in Greece is well known and so is the fact that several young Greeks studied in Munich on scholarships granted by him.
