Abstract:
In this paper, Prof. Panayotou deals with Aristotle’s conceptions regarding embryonic development and heredity. In the philoso pher’s main Treatise «De generatione Animalium» he appears a strong supporter of the epigenetic interpretation of development, necessary by-product of which is the transmission of characters from one generation to the other. Some of the main ideas of the contemporary «Entwicklungsmechanik») can with no difficulty be ascribed to Aristotle’s original thoughts on the subject.
