During the first centures of Christian Era, hymnography in Greek was not easy to develop, mainly because of the instability of the Greek language, in transition form pitch to stress accent and subject to major changes in both grammar and vocabulary. In the 5th century AD, the hymnographic works of Romanos the Melodist marked the forceful comeback of Greek as a means of poetic expression. Romanos’ language was, grosso modo, the common Greek of his time, and therefore constitutes a valuable source for the study of Byzantine Greek. Later on, the revival of Byzanine interest for Ancient Greek tradition led to the use of a much more conservative language in Christian hymnography, which imitates classical Greek and therefore is not representative of the spoken language.
