Roman gardens
Abstract:
According to Pliny ’s Natural History the Romans introduced in Italy, and from there in Western and in part of Central Europe, a great variety of trees and plants they encountered in the regions of Eastern Mediterranean and Near East which they had conquered. Combining evidence from ancient literary sources and from archaeological findings, the author reconstructs the rich and beautiful gardens that ornated Italian cities such as Pompey and Rome itself, where they provided a shelter of freshness and luxuriance amidst the often malodorous spots of the Empire’s capital.
