Plutarch’s thought in Modem Greek Enlightenment

Abstract:
Many thinkers who evolved in the environment of Modern Greek Enlightenment were influenced by the ideas of Plutarch and of the pseudoPlutrachean treatise On the education of children. The emphasis put by this work on virtue as a goal of education was in complete resonance with their own educational beliefs. It is, therefore, not surprising that this treatise has been translated, commented and taught by numerous modern Greek scholars. More generally, the Plutarchean corpus was constantly a means of moral education of Greek youth after the foundation of Modern Greek state. In 1838, the Coray’s edition of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives was reprinted. It would be very interesting to track Plutarch’s reception in later years, through the textbooks used in elementary and secondary schools.
