The presence of Cardinal Bessarion from Trebizond in Modem Greek intelligentsia of the 19th and 20th centuries : a historical a critical survey

The presence of Cardinal Bessarion in Modern Greek intelligentsia of the 19th century was initially determined by a literary and historical apporach, while one can also discern a theological and philisophical one, either dogmatic or critical, according to the ideological and religious inclinations of the various scholars. Towards the end of the 19 th and at the beginning of the 20th century, appears an increasing interest in collecting, studying and editing Bessarion ’s works. From the mid-20th century on, scholars seek above all to understand the spiritual environment in which the wise Cardinal lived and worked, in the frame of a more balanced and documented interpretation of his national, political and religious actions.
