Greek scholars under Turkish rule : Ananias the Stammerer, archbishop ofTzia and Thermia (1771-1785)

The author edits and comments upon two hitherto unpublished documents written by a 18th century Greek cleric, the Archbishop of Tzia and Thermia Ananias the Stammerer: a letter addressed to the nobility and the popular representatives of his diocese, and a speech probably delivered on the occasion of his enthronement. The study of both documents show that Ananias was not as an eminent scholar as himself and his commentators thought him to be: his command of Greek language and rhetoric is rather limited and his style rather tedious and superficial.
