Abstract:
The issue of Philhellenism, i.e. the movement in favor of the insurrected Greeks in 1821 among western Europeans, is a broad one and has been researched by many historians. In this frame, the contribution of French military volunteers to the Greek cause was very important. Of course their motivations were not uniform; nevertheless in the majority of cases they acted in a spontaneous and unselfish way. In addition, the crisis of the French army, especially after Napoleon’s defeat in 1815, favored the arrival of illustrious French military men in the insurrected areas. A survey of the lists comprising the French Philhellenes leads us to the conclusion that the Philhellenes’ Batallion was formed mainly by professional officers who participated in many battles from 1822 on.
