About the play “Cleomenes” by August Lafontaine

Abstract:
The paper introduces the translation in modern Greek of the play “Cleomenes”, written by German novelist and dramatist August Lafontaine. This translation was published in 1817, in the wake of the Greek National Insurrection of 1821. The story of King Cleomenes of Sparta is presented in a lyrical and exaggerated way, as a passionate drama of frustrated love and political intrigue. At the same time, it underlines the importance of patriotism and devotion to one’s country, and this was the main reason for its success in pre-revolutionary Greece.
