Demetrios Paparrigopoulos as a playwright
Author:
Abstract:
Demetrios Paparrigopoulos was one of the most significant representatives of 19th century Greek poetry. A herald of Romanticism in newly liberated Greece, Paparrigopoulos became famous for his pessimistic verses glorifying death. Less known are his theatrical works, which are presented here by the author. Despite the fact that some of his plays were quite successful in his time, and for all the vividness of the characters portrayed in them, they were too weak, linguistically and aesthetically, to pass the test of time, and are now quite forgotten.
