Cypriots in Samos

The article is an inquiry into the presence of Cypriots in 19 th century Samos by means of examining the family names which evoke a Cypriot origin of their holders. From the relevant documents it appears that the number of Cypriots in Samos was higher than it would be normally expected. This was probably due to the fact that many Cypriots fleed their native island after 1570, when the Turks defeated the Venitians and conquered Cyprus. These Cypriot refugees found shelter in Samos and contributed to the development and prosperity of their new home.
