The period from Christmas to Epiphany, known as the “Twelve Days” (Dodekamero), is considered, in the popular tradition of all Balkan countries, as an important moment of transition in the frame of the year cycle, with the appearance of liminal phenomena linked to supernatural beings from the center of the earth. The paper is a comparative study of apotropaic rites and folkloric customs related to the Dodekamero in the rural areas of Greece and Bulgaria, with a view to showing the similarities between the two cultures indealing with the dangers and the expectations generated by the crossing of transitory periods.
