Abstract:
Leonard Bernstein took the American Broadway musical to new heights of seriousness in his West Side Story (1957- film version 1961), a work based loosely on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (text- book written by Arthur Laurents). West Side Story features various dances and several extraordinary songs, (lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), many of which have become classics (Maria, America, Tonight, I feel pretty etc). This article focuses on the above characteristics of the work, and especially on its musical style, based on impressive big band jazz music, symphonic orchestral writing and Latin-beat music, like the mambo. Special notion is given to the overall plot, the Shakespearean role - counterparts and the famous 1984 Deutsche Grammophon recording, conducted by L.Bernstein himself.
